What about my divorce?

After divorce, you remain responsible for the debts you had jointly when you were married. Even if the court ordered your ex-spouse to pay a particular debt, you can be held responsible in the eyes of the creditors if it is not paid, or if payments are late.

If you are facing divorce, now is a time when it will be very helpful to request a credit report to see everything that’s in your file. It may be best to close joint accounts where possible, so that you can gradually re-establish your credit separately.

When you apply for a loan, credit scores are usually computed on one spouse or the other, and the results will vary if the spouse's credit histories are different. Income is normally combined to make the final decision.
